“I’m calling on our partners to be part of something bigger–to contribute to an event that positively impacts children and families. There's so much in this world we can't control, but we can create moments that strengthen our communities.

Finding light in heavy times
A reflection on The East End Block Party from Dr. Brittany Lopes, Executive Director
We’re hosting The East End Block Party on May 24 because now more than ever, we need to invest in our communities here at home. When you focus on social media and the news, you can feel hopeless and heavy. But when you shift your focus to the people you interact with daily, or the neighborhood you live in, you’re going to see light and hope. That’s what this block party is about–it’s a reminder of the joy found right here in Richmond.
During our last professional development day, I encouraged staff to focus where their feet are and that’s what we’re doing by hosting this event at our school’s campus on Carlisle Avenue. We’re putting a table out and inviting other community partners to take a seat. We want every family, regardless of whether they have a direct connection to the school, to have a fun and safe way to spend Memorial Day Weekend. We want to celebrate our students who are making waves in their community and will go on to do great things.
Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us: “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” This event is more than a gathering–it’s about encouraging each other to love our neighbor and continue to build a bright future for Richmond’s East End.
I hope The East End Block Party feels like going to a friend’s house for a backyard BBQ. I hope attendees meet new neighbors, that kids have fun, and that we can all be present. If you want to be part of the joy, consider sponsoring the event or volunteering. If you ever want to visit our school, I’d love to welcome you. Rise Academy feels like home and we’re at our best when our doors are open.
